Lake Travis Texas Fishing: Access, Bass & Local Rules

Surface Acres

TPWD lists Lake Travis at 18,622 acres on the Colorado River northwest of Austin.

Maximum Depth

Deep water, ledges, suspended bass and drop-shot zones matter more than on shallow lakes.

Conservation Pool

Conservation pool elevation is 681 ft msl, but TPWD notes the lake is usually below this level.

High Fluctuation

TPWD lists normal fluctuation as high, often 10-20 feet.

Lower Lake

Clearer water, marinas, floating docks, rockpiles, ledges, steep drop-offs and more finesse fishing.

Upper Lake

More stain, more creek-arm thinking, and better shallow cover when water is high.

Little Vegetation

TPWD says no significant aquatic vegetation is present, so focus on rock, docks, ledges and flooded terrestrial cover when high.

Start on Points

Windy main-lake points are a high-value starting point, especially when bait is visible.

Fish Drop-Offs

Lake Travis largemouth are known for suspending over points and along drop-offs.

Use Docks

Floating docks and marinas on the lower lake provide shade, bait, vertical structure and ambush edges.

Largemouth Bass

Good numbers, often smaller. TPWD lake record: 15.32 lb largemouth caught Feb. 28, 2021.

Guadalupe Bass

Texas state fish, present around rocky areas and creek-like habitat; some 12-15 inch fish noted in survey information.

White Bass

Spring run happens in major creek arms, the Pedernales River and the upper Colorado River arm.

Striped Bass

Low-density striped bass fishery remains in the extreme lower reservoir; stockings ended after 2017 due to low utilization.

Catfish

Blue, channel and flathead catfish are found throughout the reservoir. Blue catfish dominate the catfish population.

Sunfish / Crappie

Sunfish are family-friendly around shoreline cover. Crappie are present but not the main Lake Travis draw.

Choose a Texas freshwater package if you only plan to fish inland freshwater.

Fresh + Coast Later

Choose all-water if you may also fish Galveston, Port Aransas, Corpus, Rockport or other coastal waters.

Youth

Resident and nonresident youth under 17 are generally exempt from Texas fishing license requirements.

• LCRA public boat ramp information for minimum lake level and notes.
• Travis County park news for closures, cash-only notices, debris and capacity.
• Wind forecast; open water gets rough fast.
• Recent rainfall; high-water debris can damage props and hulls.
• Park hours and whether the ramp is 24-hour or park-hours only.

How Level Changes the Bite

• Rising water can push bass into newly flooded shoreline cover.
• Falling water often pulls fish to deeper docks, rock transitions and ledges.
• Stable water helps repeat patterns from one day to the next.
• Muddy inflows can make the upper lake fish more like a stained reservoir.
• Clear lower lake rewards finesse, long casts and natural colors.
• Low water can make bank access steeper and ramps more limited.

Beat the Weekend Ramp Rush

On hot weekends, launch very early. Mansfield is strong but can queue hard during peak boating season.

Fish the Windy Side

Wind can position bait on points. Use topwater, jerkbait, spinnerbait or crankbait before switching to finesse.

Dock Shade Matters

Skip random sunny docks. Focus on shade edges, deeper dock ends, walkways and docks near points or creek mouths.

Downsize in Clear Water

Lower-lake fish see pressure. Use lighter line, smaller profiles and natural colors when the water is clear.

After Rain, Go Moving

If upper-lake water is stained, try spinnerbaits, squarebills and louder moving baits around flooded cover.

Use Lights in Winter/Summer

Lighted docks on the lower lake can hold white bass/striped bass activity at night. Respect private property.

Carry Cash

Several Travis County park pages warn cash-only or no card at entrance booths. Bring cash for entry/trailer fees.

Wear Real Shoes

Rocks, zebra mussels and steep banks can cut feet. This matters for kids, swimmers and bank anglers.

Bring Drinking Water

Cypress Creek notes no drinking water/electricity, and Sandy Creek has had no potable-water notices. Bring your own.

Zebra Mussel Checklist

• Clean, drain and dry your boat, trailer, livewell, bait bucket and gear.
• Draining water is required by law.
• Possession and transport of zebra mussels is illegal.
• Inspect props, anchors, ladders, transducers and trailer bunks.
• Do not move lake water or live-bait water to another waterbody.

Highland Lakes Safety

• Wear a life jacket; do not just store it under a seat.
• Never swim alone.
• Swimming is prohibited within 50 feet of public boat ramps on Highland Lakes.
• Watch for sudden drop-offs, submerged trees and floating debris.
• Do not attach to, move, tamper with or damage buoys/markers.

Algae and Pet Safety

• Avoid floating algae or cyanobacteria mats.
• Keep dogs from drinking lake water or licking wet fur after swimming.
• Rinse pets with clean water after lake contact.
• Seek veterinary care quickly if a dog becomes sick after lake exposure.

After Heavy Rain

• Expect floating debris near shorelines and ramps.
• Run slower than normal until you see conditions.
• Watch for changed water color and submerged hazards.
• Check county and LCRA notices before boating or swimming.

West-Side Cliffs

Beautiful, but not always easy fishing access. Use safe coves and posted areas, not risky cliff edges.

Cove Strategy

Fish cove mouths, rocky transitions and wind-blown sides. In low light, try topwater or jerkbait first.

Cash and Fees

Official park notices show cash-only entry/amenity fee situations. Bring cash and verify before going.

Ramp Choice

Collier and Tatum are normal ramp names to check. Tournament Point status can change; live notices control.

Camping

Improved campsites can fill fast. Reservations are recommended, especially holidays and summer weekends.

Use the Map

Pick your cove, ramp, restroom and meet-up spot before entering. The park is too large for last-minute guessing.
